TANKER DAYS
LAKE MARACAIBO BRIDGE
Scroll down to see all of the pictures

We were inward bound into Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela on "Ellora" to take on a full cargo of Crude Oil. We found we had to pass under this very newly constructed bridge across the lake which was not on our charts. The local Pilot did not speak English and none of us spoke Spanish to find out what height it was above the water level in order for us to pass under safely. Looking back now the ship in the photograph appears to have plenty of clearance but she was fully loaded and quite a bit smaller than us. I took these photographs just in case we didn't make it!
