MY CADET SHIP DAYS IN
BRITISH INDIA STEAM NAVIGATION COMPANY
MS "CHINDWARA" 1954 - 1957
I joined the "Chindwara" on its 11th voyage in November 1954. Fellow first trip cadets were Stuart Sellwood, Gwyn John, John Moule and Mike Sharp. At the end I think of about the third voyage I was the only one of that intake remaining, the rest having either given up the sea or been transferred to other vessels.
The first voyage was to Australia, the next India and after that back to Australia. From then on I think the other trips were all to East and South Africa.
The Group photographs show the Officers and Cadets during my time on the ship. Some of the later names are a bit hazy and any errors or omissions you may spot, I would be pleased to have the corrected details.
I left the "Chindwara" at the end of the 17th voyage in October 1957 to join the "Dunera" when she was a Troopship.
TWO PICTURES OF "DUNERA" IN TROOPSHIP COLOURS
Whilst on the "Dunera" one voyage took me around the Mediterranean servicing all the garrisons there and finishing off in Cyprus at the height of the EOKA troubles. The next voyage was to Christmas Island in the Pacific relieving the garrison of Royal Engineers and other military personnel carrying out the "A" bomb nuclear testing.
I left the ship in April 1958 to go for my Second Mate's ticket.
